For NC residents. how do you properly transfer title if you haven't registered vehicle from another state?

NC DMV are so demanding. They want a bill of sale, lien blah, blah, blah, and for these documents to be notarized. What does that mean? I bought a trailer from oregon. moved it to charlotte, nc and then sold it after it had been in storage for 11 months. I sold the trailer, mailed out the title with just the dealership's number and info. I hadn't signed it yet. I called the dealership if they could generate a bill of sale for them since we hadn't registered it. Would I have to register it in Oregon first and then transfer it to them? It would cost me $165 in wasted dollars. There has to be a better way. Or could I just sign some forms releasing me from all liability without registering the vehicle. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!|||Since your'e not a dealer, you would need to title it to yourself before selling it.

To title it to yourself, you need the OR title and a bill of sale. They probably need to be notarized since it's an interstate transaction. You need to get with the person who sold it to you and sort that out first.

Notarizing means that a Notary Public witnesses the sellers signature on the OR title. If that was not done, they'll need to get a new title, sign it in the presence of a Notary who will apply their seal, and then send it to you. Ditto for the bill of sale if that needs to be notarized as well.

You might be able to get a title without registering it; some states allow that, others don't.

The NC DMV will tell you what you need to do. There's no way to get around their requirements. Suck-up and do it the right way. If it costs you $165, then pay the money. If you don't deliver a clear title to the person that you sold it to, they'll be suing you soon, so get off your backside.
