Car bought in NC; registered in NY; no title, where do I get it?

Bought a car two years ago in NC, never filed the title application. Registered the car in New York, no problem. Paid off the loan and got a lien release letter. I want to donate the car, but need the title. Can I do this through NYS DMV with the lien release letter? Or do I have to do this through NC DMV?|||This is called a "Goldenrod" registration. You received a NY registration, but not a NY title (because you couldn't present a title as it was with your lender)

Take the lien release letter to the NY DMV along with your most current goldenrod registration, and apply for a NY title.

This is how we do it (and call it) in California and I'm assuming it's the same in NY.

Vehicle code: 7.100 Nontitle (Goldenrod) Registration,

Name of Registered Owner(s) Remains the Same鈥擳o convert a nontitle (goldenrod) registration to a regular California registration when the name of the owner on the nontitle registration is not changing, the requirements are:

鈥he last-issued California goldenrod registration if available.

鈥he last-issued title (California or nonresident) and any supporting documents that may be necessary, such as a power of attorney, lien satisfied, or bill(s) of sale.

鈥 smog certification, if appropriate.

鈥ny fees due.|||In the state of NC you do not get a title for your car unless the car is paid off. I know NY they give you the title when you register a car it just has a lien hold section (not sure why you did not get one when you registered the car if registered in NY)

My suggestion before you go and do all of this. Make sure you have all your papers, loan satisfaction, and all the papers from when you bought the car and registered (if you can find them). Call or contact NY DMV http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/ and see if maybe you just never got a title from them and they can get you a duplicate title. If they tell you to contact NC DMV http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/ and see if you can send you loan satisfaction and get the title.

Hope that helps. I lived in NY and just moved to NC so I kinda have some sort of clue :-)
