My parents live in VA and own the car that I drive in NC. What state should it be registered in?

I have insurance in NC to cover myself as the primary operator of the car (though it's still part of my parent's policy). I asked two people at the DMV driver's license office if I needed to register the car in NC - one said no because I'm a college student, the other said that every vehicle operated in NC has to be registered here also. I'm very confused!|||Check with your insurance carrier. NC insurance laws are a lot more complicated than other states. Different carriers handle out-of-state drivers/vehicles differently, so you need to find out how your specific carrier covers your situation. Don't guess on this one. Find out how your company deals with your situation so you know for sure you'll be covered in the event of a claim.|||If your parents are the owners or co-owners of the car and they are regestered in Virginia and your liceneced in Virginia then the car should be able to dispaly virginia tags you may need a county sticker for the area you live in.|||The primary residence of the individual who owns the vehicle is the State in which the vehicle should be registered. Since it is your parent's car and they live in Virginia, that's where it should be registered. The first person whom you asked gave you the correct answer; since you are a temporary resident, there is no need to register it in North Carolina. Good luck!|||whichever state that has cheaper insurance rates|||Your parents should be helping you with this.If you are carrying your own automobile insurance, then, yes.you need to register the vehicle in N.C., since this is the State that the car will be in. Usually, a person is allowed so many days to change it. Then, once registered in N.C. , you will need to get a valid N.C. inspection sticker. You may need your parents' help with this since they own the vehicle. Each State has their own rules, regulations, and law. I hope that this helps.|||You need to register the car in VA. Since you are a college student, you are not a "permanent resident" of NC.|||its not ur car, its ur parents, so the car should be registered in VA. not NC
